Mount Pleasant hammer Tivoli 5-0
MOUNT PLEASANT Football Academy's head coach, Theodore Whitmore, gave his team an A-grade for their solid defensive performance after outmuscling Tivoli Gardens FC with a 5-0 thrashing in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) football match at Drax Hall Sports Complex on Thursday.
The Concacaf Caribbean Cup champions Mount Pleasant Academy jump to sixth in standings on 13 points from three wins and four draws, while Tivoli stayed fifth on 15 points, after four wins, three draws and four losses.
"I think it was a five-star performance. We covered all phases of the game defensively, we were solid and did not concede," Whitmore said, while noting his team created numerous scoring opportunities.
Warmly welcomed by their home crowd, Mount Pleasant's Daniel Green, with some beautiful play in the packed park, powered home in the 11th and 55th minutes to net a brace. Warner Brown also netted a brace, scoring in the 27th (penalty) and 74th minutes. Rapha Intervil netted the other goal, in the 66th minute.
Whitmore, with the Concacaf Caribbean Cup now out the way, emphasised the importance of each upcoming JPL game.
"I think there are a lot of things we can work on," he said of their overall play.
"We have to reset now and focus on the JPL. Every game matters moving forward, especially with us being behind on the table," added Whitmore.
Tivoli were not at their best, and failed to convert any of the few chances they managed to create and their coach, Jerome Waite, was disappointed.
"The first goal ... I will classify it as a poor defensive error not to track the player on the blindside," he said.
"Tivoli didnt turn up to play today. It was basically going in one direction, but you still have to give credit to Mount Pleasant who had superior preparation and competitive quality today," Waite added.
"We are here to stay and this team will make a turning point despite the loss."
EXCITING DRAW
Meanwhile, league leaders Montego Bay United and Harbour View FC played to an exciting 4-4 draw at Stadium East. Harbour View's Tyrone Harrison scored an own goal in the 37th minute to give MBU the lead, and Jourdain Fletcher hammered home in the 39th minute to double their advantage. Rohan Brown pulled back a goal for Harbour View in the 43rd minute, but Dwight Merrick then netted in first-half added time to restore MoBay United's two-goal advantage.
In the 46th minute, Harbour View's Garth Stewart scored to give his team some hope at 2-3, but Fletcher hit the net again in the 56th minute to give MBU a 4-2 lead.
Harbour View, however, were resolute and Trayvone Reid scored a brace, netting in the 67th and 80th minutes to grab a share of the points for the east Kingston club.
The JPL resumes on Sunday.
