‘John Crow’ killed in police shootout in Porus
A Manchester man was shot and killed during an early-morning confrontation with police in Porus on Thursday, in an incident now under investigation by the Independent Commission of Investigation (INDECOM).
The dead man has been identified as Omer Campbell, otherwise called 'John Crow', a resident of Manchester.
According to police reports, at about 5:45 a.m., a team of officers went into the Trinity area of Porus while searching for alleged gunmen. During the operation, Campbell was accosted by the police and reportedly challenged the officers, prompting them to open fire in what they say was self-defence.
Campbell was shot during the encounter and later transported to the Mandeville Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Following the shooting, police said they recovered an illegal firearm from Campbell. The weapon was identified as a Hi-Point Model C 9mm pistol, fitted with a magazine containing three rounds of ammunition.
INDECOM has since launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
